Understanding and supporting our Indigequeer Kids and Community

The Threads of Justice Collective is collaborating with Native community partners to host an event to bring Tribal people together from around Oregon to show solidarity and support for our trans/gender nonconforming, two-spirit, queer community

We will be hosting a gathering with invitations to the nine Federally recognized Tribes in the State of Oregon and Early Childhood Educators. The Gathering for approximately fifty people will be held  (2025) at the Museum of Natural History and Culture in Eugene Oregon

Our objective is to bring people together for meaningful and impactful experience and introduction of art, books, and community that highlights not only the threat to trans/gender nonconforming people, the joy and pain of this identity, but also the potential and need for solidarity and allies for resistance to current threats.

Our collaboration with the Co-Curators of the “Transgressors” Exhibit is an exciting component of this proposed Project.  This Exhibit is a powerful and transformative expression of two-spirit, trans, queer and gender nonconforming lived experience. One of our Threads of Justice Collective founders, Board Members and Elder has their carving artwork displayed in the Exhibit.  We believe participants at the Gathering will be moved by visiting the Exhibit.

Gathering participants will also attend a reading of the children’s book, “Beat the Drum” a bilingual Chinuk and English story of a Native child who challenges gender norms.  The book also introduces the term “two-spirit”.  It is the work of two Threads of Justice Collective members, with artwork from a Tribal descendent. First 50 Participants at the Gathering will each receive a free copy of the book and hear the bilingual reading and drumming presentation.
